As a doctor, I’ve been witness to a lot of people’s personal changes. Some people struggle with diet and lifestyle adjustments while others seem to swan-dive into a whole new way of living—and for a long time, I’ve wondered what accounts for the difference.

When I think back to the patients who made swan-dive transformations, nothing about the patients themselves sticks out as a unifying factor. But there is one detail that a lot of their success stories share: in a word, their approach to change.

Most people resolve to make changes. In other words, they commit and they mentally push themselves to stick with it—but the trouble, I believe, is that a lot of people don’t really adjust how they think in the process. Specifically, a lot of people struggle to keep their minds open to new possibilities (even the ones they’d love).

No surprise that diet and lifestyle changes can often feel like unpleasant guests in a crowded house. Spoiler alert: when that’s how things start, they don’t usually get better.

But I notice that a lot of the “swan-divers” don’t just resolve to make changes. They revolutionize to make changes. They’re willing to throw out old assumptions and expectations, try a bunch of new things, educate themselves in the relevant science—whatever helps to make those changes feel right, natural, and normal in their lives.

A lot of popular dietary regimens—keto, paleo, Whole30, WW (formerly Weight Watchers), programs targeting calories or carbs, you name it—aren’t actually very accommodating of these “personal revolutions.” They tend to favor rules and restrictions over options, flexibility, or personalization; you’re meant to adhere to the diet whether or not you’d have arrived there on your own terms.

When you choose your diet based on what you’re told to remove and restrict, your relationship with food suffers and your understanding of what’s healthy can become severely skewed.

The diets listed above are not only restrictive, but they all fail to focus on what’s truly important: YOUR GUT. Yes, a couple of them might claim gut healing as a side-benefit, but they simply don’t have the science to back it up.

“I’m not sure why you’re the one to help me make a change.”

That’s fair, because at the end of this, it’s you who’s got to make the change. Here’s where I come in: I’m a board-certified, award-winning gastroenterologist. I’ve written two New York Times bestselling books that demonstrate exactly how turbocharging your gut is the foundation for lifelong health. Plus, I’m a reformed junk-food junkie and this is the challenge I would take if I were starting my journey over again.

I developed Microbiome 21 as a tried and true (science-backed...and fun!) way to help people make needed changes in their approach to health. Habits at their core are about informed action. I plan to make it easier than ever before to make healthy habits part of your routine so your routine promotes health.

“I'm not vegan. In fact, I really love meat and will never give it up.”

Good news - you don’t have to! Microbiome 21 isn’t about taking away. It’s about adding in. While I do not personally eat meat and you do not need meat to support a healthy diet, you’ll still love this challenge even if you’re not vegan or vegetarian. You can include meat with the recipes I’ll give you in this challenge, but I bet you’re going to love them all on their own.

“I don’t think substantial change can be made in 21 days.”

When it comes to gut health, change happens fast even if you don’t realize it. A 2013 study in Nature by Lawrence A. David found that changes start to occur in the microbiome just 24 hours after making a dietary change. In 5 days there can be a dramatic shift. And in just 14 days, you can alter functional output.

“Shouldn’t I be looking for a program that’s specific to my health goals?”

What Microbiome 21 is NOT

A Meal Plan

You can find recipes anywhere (and you do get plenty in Microbiome 21), but this is much more important. Instead, this is empowering you with knowledge that reshapes how you think about your nutrition, that allows you to understand yourself better, that ultimately parlays into healthy choices that’re so much more important than a meal plan.

A Quick Fix

You feel a difference pretty fast when you change your gut-health habits, and you feel that difference for as long as you maintain those habits. Better still, you’re not just seeing the psychological benefits of habit, like shrinking the amount of stuff you have to think and worry about; you’re also seeing the physiological benefits of habit (like increased energy), because it is literally and physically true that your gut responds well to consistency.

A Fad Diet

Microbiome 21 is not a trend, a fad, or a flash in the proverbial pan; it’s backed by extensive scientific and medical research, and I have all of my receipts (a.k.a. links and citations). You don't need to count points, live off a single brand of food, live in restriction, or do anything else that many programs promise will deliver magical results that seem too good to be true (because they usually are).

"My husband and I started 2022 the best possible way by signing up for Dr. B’s 21-Day Microbiome 21 Challenge. We’ve been vegan for five years and WFPB for the past 2 ½, but after spending so much time in lockdown, we really felt we had let things slip. When I started Dr. B’s 21-day challenge, I was having attacks of GERD and IBS two or three times a week and felt lethargic all the time. I have now been 6 weeks without any gut issues at all!
