The 5 Steps to Diagnosing Your Food Intolerance
Consider this the backbone and foundation of getting on a path to healing.
If you want to properly treat your food intolerances and sensitivities, you have to know what you’re treating. All choices – what to eat, how much to eat, when to eat, do you need supplements or medicines – come from first understanding what you’re treating. This is why this is the first step, the most important step, and what we will focus our time and energy on.

Nourish Your Gut
Unlike a food allergy, which is an immune response to a food, a food intolerance is a response to food that does not involve the activation of your immune system. There are a number of different mechanisms that can cause food intolerances, ranging from enzyme deficiencies (lactose intolerance is a classic), to pharmacologic (such as monosodium glutamate, or MSG), or your digestive system struggling to keep up with the demands of your diet or other factors of digestive and gastrointestinal functions.
Symptoms may not occur for several hours after the food ingestion and can last for hours or even days. An individual can be sensitive to multiple foods or food groups, making it difficult to isolate what is what. It’s complicated!

I’ve dedicated my life to learning how to heal the gut from the inside out.
I completed a bachelor’s degree from Vanderbilt University, an MD from Georgetown University, and a master’s in clinical investigation from Northwestern University.
I was also the chief medical resident at Northwestern and the chief gastroenterology fellow at UNC, and I received the highest award given by both my residency and fellowship.
I created this training because many experience food intolerance, but not enough folks talk about it. When we’re educated about a condition, we make the right choices — whether that means seeking the right professional to help us navigate our difficulties or making changes within our control to feel better.
